What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that can blur your central vision. It happens when aging causes damage to the macula — the part of the eye that controls sharp, straight-ahead vision.

What is the Macula?

The Macula is the most sensitive part of the retina and is responsible for seeing detail. This includes vision for reading, faces, many colours, and fine sight.

Why does Macular Degeneration occur?

The Macula is the most used part of the retina. With time it may develop “wear and tear”. This causes scarring, bruising, and the formation of degenerative tissue.

Are there any warning signs of AMD?

Symptoms of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) may include distortion in vision, particularly central vision. Faces may become less clear, straight lines may become wavy and shapes may appear odd. There may be a family history, but your optician may pick up any early signs of AMD.

How do you treat Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

We offer a broad range of AMD treatments at The SEE Clinic. These include special injections to slow down the degeneration. Other treatments which may be suitable include laser treatment and surgery. Your surgeon will advise you on the best course of action according to the type of AMD you have developed.

What else can I do to help control AMD?

A special supplement of vitamins and antioxidants may be helpful in controlling AMD. Sunglasses with good UV protection may also help protect the Macula.
